Remaining 2022 Met In HD Opera Season
2022 Year of Aesthetics Series №16
I am a strong proponent of opera and we do live in a new golden age of performance. Also, technology has given us across the world a chance to see performance from one of the greatest houses on the planet, The Metropolitan Opera of New York.
The Met since 2006, has been committed to improved camera technology, HD transmission quality , and live without a net performance world wide (which actually started on tv decades ago).
I have seen the entire catalog during the mets free transmission during covid, Peter Gelb’s leadership at the met has made theses productions being available and of exceptional quality at the theater.
The Mets Chorus and casting is world class.
Opera at the movie theater is a fine experience with close ups and multiple and multiple cameras it has advanced to a point where it is worth time and ~20 dollar cost to see.
Note : usually live broadcast on Saturday and encore rebroadcast on Wednesday
I plan to see the four operas above. I love Strauss and am captivated, but the play with in a play aspect of Ariadne auf Naxos. It is a dark comedy of compromise and patronage in the theater and the less than sacred nature of text in the theater.
Don Carlos will star a great cast including don Carlos by Michael Polanzani , Sonya Yonacheva as Elizabeth and Eric Owens as Philip II of Spain. It will in the french version (also an Italian version) and it will be directed by the exceptional David McVikers. It may be Verdi’s best which puts it at the pinnacle of opera. if you want to see only one opera this year this is the one. New production so new sets and costumes.
I am seeing Turandot for only one reason, Anna Netrebko will sing Turandot
Hamlet is new to me so i have little to say about it. It is a new production at the Met!
(note i have no affiliation with the met , other than as a small scale donor)
