Once in A Life Time, is actually going to be twice in a life time. I have a full slate of concerts lined up but I stumbled upon the re release of Stop Making Sense last week. Sept 22 it opens in theaters in IMAX. I have watched the original on DVD several times, and constantly take a hit from this concert on YouTube on a weekly basis. It may be the greatest recorded punk/Pop/soundparadise ever put to film. It is a seminal concert for me, when in ND, where no on traveled seeing this as a teenager in a movie theater was explosive. I have always loved Tina Base, Chris Franz keyboards and guitar, and Harris drums, but David Byrne was in his ultimate form, the band was so tight that it could go completely loose.
The sound has been remastered from original masters and the Film has been converted to IMAX. It opens Sept 21st and plays into October.
The back up band and singers were part of the family they were all at one with the band. They got killer solos and intros and Byrne and the back up singer s were musically in love.
I think this was a total inflection point in music and also a pinnacle of filming a live concert. This was what the punk movement became, this was the triumph of the misfits fitting in musically.
If you don’t love Chris Franz keyboard work then you may not like keyboards, and if you don’t like Tina’s base line then for sure you don’t like base.
The extra keyboard player and percussion gives this a depth of sound. and the back up (lead guitar player ) allows Byrne to just $%@%%%$#@#$%# sing.
Go see it and take your kids, this is a great musical wonder that should be shared across generations.
